Westfield Police Department

This week, the Westfield Police Department received the “Go Purple” Award from Prevail, Inc in recognition of those who went purple during the month of October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For more information on Prevail, Inc. and the Go Purple campaign, please visit www.prevailinc.com. Detective Brett Bays was named Prevail’s November Hero of the Month. Each month, the staff at Prevail nominates and votes on an outstanding community partner that they would like to recognize for going above and beyond when working with victims. Here is his nomination: “When your life has been up ended by a crime, compassion, empathy and understanding are key. Throughout his investigations, Detective Brett Bays remains focused on listening to families and victims, who have experienced sexual violence, getting them connected to appropriate resources in the community and maintaining the integrity of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) protocol. He has been open to expanding his knowledge in evidence-based, best practices by attending national conference with the team and open to feedback about how to make the process more cohesive for the people involved. From an advocacy standpoint, families and survivors impacted by sexual violence always express that he is extraordinarily helpful. He is willing to break things down for them and follows through on what he says he will do. With every case, he coordinates with other members of the SART team on the case. He is an exceptional law enforcement officer and detective. It is for these reasons that it is our honor to recognize Detective Brett Bays from the Westfield Police Department as the Prevail Hero of the Month.”

Westfield Fire Department

Westfield Firefighters Will Distribute 1,200 Smoke DetectorsDonated by Citizens Energy GroupWestfield, IN- The Westfield Fire Department recently received a donation of 1,200 hard-wired smoke detectors from Citizens Energy Group to be handed out to low-income residents.“We are honored that Citizens Energy Group thought of Westfield and those residents who otherwise can’t afford to have smoke detectors in their homes,” says Westfield Fire Marshal Garry Harling. “The risk of dying from a home fire is cut in half when a working smoke alarm is installed. This donation means there will be 1,200 families in Westfield protected.”The smoke detectors will be handed out during the annual Open Doors Thanksgiving Project. The Westfield food pantry hands out food to those in need, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. During that time, Westfield Firefighters will be giving out the donated smoke detectors.“While natural gas prices remain low, we know some customers will still struggle to pay their bill during this cold-weather season and may turn to alternate heating sources,” said Craig Moore, Director of Citizens Corporate Development. “By providing free smoke detectors, we hope to raise awareness for all residents. In the unfortunate case of a house fire, we want everyone to have the warning they need to get out unharmed.”The Open Doors Thanksgiving Project takes place November 22nd at 9:00 a.m. located at Westfield City Services 2728 East 171st Street.
