FDIC Conducting Training on Union Street

The Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) will be conducting a Hands On Training (HOT) Burn this Monday April 24 and Tuesday April 25.

Residents in the City of Westfield, Washington Township and surrounding area will see a column of smoke rising from 221 and 229 South Union Street, as firefighters conduct live fire training in a real home. This rare training opportunity allows firefighters from across the United States to gain valuable experience practicing fire operations, building entry and search techniques, and fire behavior training.

During the day-long series of exercises, training officers will set a fire in a room, firefighters will enter the home and extinguish it, and then training officers will set another fire.

“This is a great opportunity for firefighters to exercise critical skills that help us better protect our communities,” says Deputy Chief Russ Shoaf of the Westfield Fire Department. “Although firefighters frequently train with live fire in specially designed training props at Training Centers, the opportunity to gain experience on a fire in a real home is invaluable.”

FDIC will be closing South Union Street from Jersey to the north to Mill Street on the south. Traffic will be detoured from heading south on Union, and will detour west on Jersey, then turn south on Mill Street back to Union.  Traffic heading north will be the opposite. The road will be closed between 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. each morning (Monday and Tuesday) until 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents on the north side of the training house will have access to their home.  All other traffic will be detoured.
