On Tuesday, August 7th, neighborhoods throughout Westfield are invited to join with thousands of communities nationwide to participate in the 24th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Westfield Police Department, will involve over 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

Westfield has been experiencing tremendous excitement lately with the population explosion and the development burst and with the impending Town to City transition in January, it appears that much more exciting and interesting times lie ahead.

The Westfield Public Works Department is about to break ground on a three million dollar building expansion which will begin within the next few weeks. This expansion project is a direct result of the rapid growth rate that Westfield has been experiencing over the past five years and it will accommodate the expanding Town staff. This project will be funded by the Town's utility budget and will not require any rate or tax hikes for Westfield residents.

Mrs. Nikki Webb of the Westfield Police Department (WPD) is the recent recipient of Northwestern University's prestigious "Award of Achievement" for the successful completion of 200 hours of specialized training in Criminal Forensic Investigative Techniques. The training, conducted at Northwestern University (NWU) in Chicago involved classroom and hands-on training in the areas of evidence collection, photography and bloodstain reconstruction at crime scenes.

In addition to breaking ground on a three million dollar office expansion, the Westfield Public Works Department will begin a 2.97 million dollar expansion to their River Road Water Treatment Facility beginning this summer. This expansion project is also a direct result of the rapid growth rate that has been occurring in Westfield over the past five years.

This summer, the Westfield Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a wide variety of summer programs targeting local youth. The Westfield Parks Department is a new department and this is the first summer that youth programs have been offered.

The Westfield Public Works Department is planning for another eventful summer, coordinating several improvement projects throughout the Town of Westfield. According to Public Works Assistant Director, Kurt Wanninger, the improvements are much needed and residents can expect to have minimal inconveniences.

As new mobile applications drive WLAN/WWAN adoption, IT has responded to these challenges by providing pervasive mobile access to information virtually anytime from anywhere. IT now provides Town employees with high-speed wireless computer access at all Town buildings via wireless hot spots. Employees are no longer reliant on their offices when the need for information arises.
