Westfield has been experiencing tremendous excitement lately with the population explosion and the development burst and with the impending Town to City transition in January, it appears that much more exciting and interesting times lie ahead.
Since the year 2000, the population of Westfield has jumped from approximately 9,000 to over 25,000 and is steadily growing. Development plans seem to be flooding the Westfield Planning Department and the growth rate doesn't seem to be slowing down.
The Town has begun its transition to officially becoming the City of Westfield beginning January 1, 2008. Beginning January 1, a Mayor will take office along with a new City Council. Elections for those positions will be held in November.
Striking new developments are popping up all over Westfield, including Viking Meadows, a development located at US 31 and 156th Street. This development will be featured at the Midwest Living Magazine's Home-A-Rama coming up in August. The development consists of over 300 acres of custom built homes and showcases unique architecture, distinctive floor plans, and an amazing array of décor that is sure to impress anyone.
The Westfield Parks and Recreation Department has just held a grand opening for two new parks. A Skateboard Park was constructed at Asa Bales Park, located at 205 West Hoover Street across from Westfield High School, and a Splash Park was constructed at Quaker Park, located behind the Westfield Public Safety Building off of SR 32.
Both facilities have been under construction for the past twelve months. Since opening, the parks have been incredibly popular and staff hopes that enthusiasm carries throughout the years to come.
Earlier this year, the Town Council commissioned Cripe Engineering to perform a Downtown Study that would consist of land and resident surveys which will ultimately outline what the redevelopment of the downtown area should be. Cripe has developed three proposed layout/development plans for downtown from which residents and the Town Council will choose.
All three proposed downtown designs consist of the development of a trail head crossing junction of the Monon and Midland Trails in the heart of downtown. This trail head would be composed of pedestrian friendly businesses and scenic landscapes that will compliment the downtown impression. While attracting residents and visitors from across Indiana, this trail head along with the new downtown atmosphere, will serve as a significant economic development tool and bring upscale businesses to downtown Westfield. The first phase of the construction of the Monon Trail is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2008, just north of 146th Street.
Another economic development tool that is sure to attract several prospects is the proposed US 31 corridor design. This design consists of a development plan for US 31 in Westfield which will allow for upscale architectural design and attractive landscapes that will display an eye-catching consistency with our neighbors to the south.
Residents should also expect to see construction begin early next year on three new developments located on the west side of Westfield, off of SR 32. Akerson Farms, Eagletown and Aurora Developments are three stylish developments that will showcase picturesque landscaping, a wide variety of open space and classy residential and retail structures.
Additionally, The Westfield Public Works Department is about to break ground on a three million dollar building expansion which will begin this summer. This expansion project is also a direct result of the rapid growth and it will accommodate the expanding Town staff. This project will be funded by the Town's utility budget and will not require any rate or tax hikes for Westfield residents.
Obviously, Westfield is on a significant fast track that doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. Residents can expect delightful and impressive changes in all sections of Westfield in the years to come.
