This summer, the Westfield Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a wide variety of summer programs targeting local youth. The Westfield Parks Department is a new department and this is the first summer that youth programs have been offered.
"We are excited to be hosting such amazing youth programs this summer, says Curt Cooley, Westfield Parks and Recreation Director. This has been an extremely productive year for our department, with the grand opening of the Skate Park and the Splash Park, the summer programs just increase our enthusiasm," says Cooley.
Below is a list of the summer youth programs:
Children's Theater
Children love to be the center of attention and what better way than to perform on stage in front of family and friends. This program will focus on improvisation, memorization, pantomime, and emotion work. Lighting, props and sound will also be explored. Participants are required to practice lines at home and will put on a play during the last day of class.
Classes will be held at Quaker Park, on Wednesdays. The class will begin July 11 and the final performance will be on August 15. Class time is 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. This class is for 7 to 12 year olds.
The plays that will be performed are based on the number of enrollees. If 6-10 participants, Peggy the Pint-Sized Pirate will be performed. If 10+ students enroll, Holka Polka will be performed.

High School Musical
This six-week one-hour class per week is a wonderful way to get your child moving and grooving to the soundtrack of this popular Disney movie. Children will learn some of the actual steps in the movie. The class helps children develop rhythm and coordination skills while getting great exercise. On the final day (Wednesday, August 15, 12:45-2:00 pm) there will be a live performance for friends and family.
The class will be held at Quaker Park on Wednesdays. The class will begin July 11 and the final performance is on August 15. Class time is 1:00-2:00 pm. This class is for 6 to 12 year olds.

Amazing Race
Modeled after the popular TV show, now you can play in your own community. The program is planned family style. Motions, Inc. will handle all aspects of the challenges, pit stops, detours, and intersections. Prizes will be awarded for the winning team.
This event will take place on Saturday, September 1, 2007. Your children's ages should be between 6 and 12. The event will begin at 10:00 am, and end at approximately 2:00 pm.
Cost per family $55.00
Min/Max 10 families/20 families.
Bicycle Rodeo
What a great way for children to learn about safety and health and fitness. This excellent program is designed not only as an obstacle course including riding a bicycle, but also as a way to teach children the proper rules of the road and bicycle inspection info. All children need to bring their own bicycle with their own helmet in order to participate. At least one parent is needed to attend with their child. They will be split by age groups. The ages of participation are 3 to 15 years old.
The event will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2007 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. The Rodeo will be held at Asa Bales Park.
