As new mobile applications drive WLAN/WWAN adoption, The Department of Information Technology (IT) has responded to these challenges Itronix GoBookIIIby providing pervasive mobile access to information virtually anytime from anywhere.  IT now provides Town employees with high-speed wireless computer access at all Town buildings via wireless hot spots.  As our employees have become more mobile, this allows them to roam from building-to-building and throughout the Town accessing information without the need of a wired connection.  Employees are no longer restricted to their offices when the need for information arises.

Additionally, many notebook computers used by Town employees are outfitted with a wireless card that uses cell-tower technology to access information from areas beyond the boundaries of Town buildings, the county and state.  The Itronix GoBookIII (pictured right) currently used by many employees includes multiple wireless technologies: bluetooth, WLAN, WWAN, and GPS.

Examples of departments using this technology are our Police Department mobile computer terminals.  These computers essentially create a mobile office for officers offering them access to real-time police records, GPS mapping, communications, public safety alerts, etc.  Our Fire Department uses their mobile computer terminals for faster information access to fire hydrant locations, GPS mapping, hazardous material information, etc.  The Public Works Department uses their mobile computers for field service reps to access information that results in faster, more efficient response to calls for service.

As our Town continues to grow and the need for up-to-date, real-time access to information from anywhere at anytime increases, IT will continue to provide the latest cost reducing, productivity increasing technologies that effectively and efficiently connects citizens, businesses, and government.
