Westfield, IN - Today, leaders from the cities of Westfield, Carmel, Hamilton County and the State of Indiana officially opened the last section of the Monon Trail in Westfield.  The trail now connects downtown Indianapolis to Sheridan.

“This is a great accomplishment for all of the Monon Trail communities,” said Westfield Mayor Andy Cook. “Creating amenities that encourage people to get out, stay active and enjoy our cities is what we want. The Monon Trail brings enormous economic and cultural benefits to all of the communities it touches.”

“The investment we’ve seen along the Monon Greenway in the heart of Carmel has already resulted in millions of dollars in private investment from companies wanting to be part of our ‘beach-front’ property,” said Mayor Jim Brainard. “It has enriched the health of our citizens, improved connectivity and is a tremendous economic development tool which has spurred commercial and residential growth through every community it touches.”

The Monon Trail was established in 1996 paving the way for the former railroad route to become a premiere greenway in Central Indiana. With the completion of this 2.5 mile project, the Monon Trail now runs more than 24 miles.  According to Google, the trail is the “most searched” attraction for leisure travelers to Hamilton County. In addition, the economic impact of the Monon Trail was highlighted in the 2015 Regional Cities Initiatives Development Plan which reported that the trail enhanced residential property values by an average of $13,000+ in its corridor.

The final stretch of the Monon Trail was funded with the help of an 80-20 federal match. Almost $300,000 in Park Impact fees paid the Westfield portion of the project. To improve connectivity, next month the City of Westfield will ground break on its new Monon Trail Bridge. It will span State Road 32 and is expected to be complete next summer.
